A standard adult group module on TOSS contains approximately 20 hours of instruction. Regular group lessons are normally two hours each, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., so a standard module generally includes 10 classes.

Adult group classes on TOSS have a minimum of 3 and a maximum of 12 students. This provides opportunities to communicate with classmates while still receiving individual attention, feedback and direct speaking opportunities with the teacher.

No course can guarantee the same result for every learner. Students can expect to make meaningful progress in each 20-hour module and develop the communication skills outlined for that level.

Students who attend regularly, participate and review between lessons should become increasingly comfortable understanding and communicating in Spanish. The objective is to use Spanish in real-life situations, not simply memorize grammar.

The workload is designed to support progress without feeling overwhelming. Students are expected to review the material covered in class each week because repeated exposure helps language learning.

Students wanting extra independent practice may separately purchase the Nuevo Español en Marcha A1 Exercise Book for additional vocabulary, grammar and written-Spanish exercises.

If you miss a regular adult group class and want to catch up, TOSS offers an optional private online make-up lesson for $35 + HST with the same teacher who teaches your course.

The lesson lets you review the missed material and ask questions before returning to the group. It is optional and is not automatically included with group registration.

Adult courses on TOSS are structured but communicative. Grammar and communication are taught together rather than as competing approaches.

Teachers explain grammar in context, give examples and model everyday usage. Students then apply the language through questions, guided practice, pair or group interaction and conversation. The goal is to understand Spanish structure while becoming comfortable actually using it.

There is no fixed percentage because grammar and speaking are integrated throughout each lesson. A typical progression is: learn the concept, see and hear examples, practise the structure, answer questions, use it in conversation and expand the conversation.

Listening, pronunciation, vocabulary, reading and cultural content are also included for balanced language development.

Students at the same level follow the same integrated module and curriculum. Teachers can respond to learner needs through added explanations, questions, speaking practice and expanded conversation.

If you have a highly specific goal, such as intensive conversation practice or substantial help with one grammar area, private lessons may be a better fit because they can be customized. You can explore private adult lessons on TOSS.

Each 20-hour module follows a structured outline based on the appropriate Nuevo Español en Marcha A1, A2, B1 or B2 textbook and generally covers about 4–5 units.

For example, A1.1 develops practical skills for introductions, pronunciation and spelling, nationalities, professions, phone numbers, family, personal information, time, daily routines, work schedules, breakfast and common habits. Grammar foundations include masculine and feminine forms, singular and plural, present-tense verbs, SER, TENER, reflexive verbs, possessive adjectives and demonstratives.
